Svartálfar resemble humans but are somewhat shorter and stockier. They have bulbous faces, and their skin is grayish or faintly green. They prefer to live in cool, dark, and damp places, such as caves. They possess dark vision and dislike sunlight.
The name Svartálfar comes from their evil nature. Svartálfar typically live in clans of about 15-50 individuals under a common clan leader. Most svartálfar are lazy and inefficient, willingly allowing themselves to be dominated by their chieftain. They would rather steal than work, and if multiple clans inhabit the same area, they have no qualms about raiding each other. As a result, the clans usually spread out, and svartálfar have almost no large cities or kingdoms.
